Pre-Game
As about to be newly created beings you are informed that you are to be created as your planet’s champions in an upcoming Hangry Games. For the next ten years, you will grow up on the planet you’re fighting for and be trained in the skill required for the game. Victory will bring glory for your society, as well as much needed resources.
You all have thirty two points from the custom being generator. During the next decade you will be trained to third stage and have maximum bonuses and stamina from those stages. However, there’s a small catch. Each Hangry Games requires something different from its players to keep the audience entertained. For this one it was decided that all occupations must be the same1. It will be a spectacle of lopsidedness. The teams you are competing against will be under similar restrictions. Stages earned once the games begin are not restricted.
To allow for individuality, you can also cultivate a unique skill, though it will not count towards stages or any bonuses.
As you grow up, you learn that your planet is called Serf3, and is under control of a planet called Gigas. You will be competing against four other teams from other subjugated planets. You don’t learn anything specific about past Hangry games, but the general feeling you get is that they’re extremely unfair.
1 - No Mentalist - this area of space doesn't have them.
Whilst nervously waiting for the games to begin, the head scientist on your team comes to visit you in your quarters. After some encouraging platitudes, he asks if you’ve heard the rumours about far off space men with magical powers. You have heard of these so-called Mentalists, but didn’t think much of it. The scientist tells you that the rumours are true, and thanks to some smuggled knowledge, they think they’ve learned how to enable them. All of your genetic makeups have been tweaked so that you can earn stages of Mentalist. You’ll be the test case to see if these abilities are just a lot of hype. You’re dubious.
He seems unsettled about telling you this and emphatically states that you should keep this secret. If you plan to try, only use abilities that aren’t flashy. Nothing that would cause the Gigasians to ask questions. In fact, if possible fake some brain damage before going up a stage so that it seems like you just regained a lost stage instead of going up in Mentalist.
You settle into orbit around Gigas and are given a view of a city. An advisor visits you and tells you that they’ve received the rules of the game. The city is phase 1. You’ll need to spend 100 hours there before phase 2 opens up. Phase 2 is off-world through a fold space. There are ten locations that you can pick to go in phase 2. Each location has a route to follow and a final location where you can pick up the prize. The final location has a ‘boss’ you need to defeat. If you can get the prize back to the fold space, and then back to a waiting Serf3 ship, you’ll have won.
Five of the ten phase 2 locations have a shortcut you can use to bypass the final boss. However, the shortcuts themselves have a challenge you must pass to use it.
During phase 1, you can visit up to 10 bars in the city. Once in a bar, you can receive information about one of the phase 2 locations - if they have a shortcut and the nature of the task to utilize it. You get five freebies where you can get this information for free at the bar. Otherwise, you must pass a challenge at the bar. Sometimes the challenge is obvious, and sometimes it isn’t.
The prize is a credit chip with 10,000,000,000 credits on it. There is also a bonus prize. If nobody wins, then a random city on a randomly selected Serf planet will be the proud owner of a large fusion bomb delivered at high speed. If a Serf team kills another Serf team, then their planet will not be included in the possible pool of bonus prize recipients.
Once on Gigas, you’ll be given two 1D6 weapons of your choice, a med kit, tool kit, and 20 patches each.
