Pre-Game

As about to be newly created beings you are informed that you are to be created as your planet’s champions in an upcoming Hangry Games. For the next ten years, you will grow up on the planet you’re fighting for and be trained in the skill required for the game. Victory will bring glory for your society, as well as much needed resources.

You all have thirty two points from the custom being generator. During the next decade you will be trained to third stage and have maximum bonuses and stamina from those stages. However, there’s a small catch. Each Hangry Games requires something different from its players to keep the audience entertained. For this one it was decided that all occupations must be the same1. It will be a spectacle of lopsidedness. The teams you are competing against will be under similar restrictions. Stages earned once the games begin are not restricted.

To allow for individuality, you can also cultivate a unique skill, though it will not count towards stages or any bonuses.

As you grow up, you learn that your planet is called Serf3, and is under control of a planet called Gigas. You will be competing against four other teams from other subjugated planets. You don’t learn anything specific about past Hangry games, but the general feeling you get is that they’re extremely unfair.

1 - No Mentalist - this area of space doesn't have them.

Whilst nervously waiting for the games to begin, the head scientist on your team comes to visit you in your quarters. After some encouraging platitudes, he asks if you’ve heard the rumours about far off space men with magical powers. You have heard of these so-called Mentalists, but didn’t think much of it. The scientist tells you that the rumours are true, and thanks to some smuggled knowledge, they think they’ve learned how to enable them. All of your genetic makeups have been tweaked so that you can earn stages of Mentalist. You’ll be the test case to see if these abilities are just a lot of hype. You’re dubious.

He seems unsettled about telling you this and emphatically states that you should keep this secret. If you plan to try, only use abilities that aren’t flashy. Nothing that would cause the Gigasians to ask questions. In fact, if possible fake some brain damage before going up a stage so that it seems like you just regained a lost stage instead of going up in Mentalist.

You settle into orbit around Gigas and are given a view of a city. An advisor visits you and tells you that they’ve received the rules of the game. The city is phase 1. You’ll need to spend 100 hours there before phase 2 opens up. Phase 2 is off-world through a fold space. There are ten locations that you can pick to go in phase 2. Each location has a route to follow and a final location where you can pick up the prize. The final location has a ‘boss’ you need to defeat. If you can get the prize back to the fold space, and then back to a waiting Serf3 ship, you’ll have won.

Five of the ten phase 2 locations have a shortcut you can use to bypass the final boss. However, the shortcuts themselves have a challenge you must pass to use it.

During phase 1, you can visit up to 10 bars in the city. Once in a bar, you can receive information about one of the phase 2 locations - if they have a shortcut and the nature of the task to utilize it. You get five freebies where you can get this information for free at the bar. Otherwise, you must pass a challenge at the bar. Sometimes the challenge is obvious, and sometimes it isn’t.

The prize is a credit chip with 10,000,000,000 credits on it. There is also a bonus prize. If nobody wins, then a random city on a randomly selected Serf planet will be the proud owner of a large fusion bomb delivered at high speed. If a Serf team kills another Serf team, then their planet will not be included in the possible pool of bonus prize recipients.

Once on Gigas, you’ll be given two 1D6 weapons of your choice, a med kit, tool kit, and 20 patches each.

As you prepare to disembark to Gigas City, one of your advisors offers some last minute advice. Most of the population of the city won’t know who you are, and it would be best to keep it that way. If it gets out who you are and into the networks, other Serf teams might find out who you are and use that to hunt you.

September 13, 2026 - Big Bada Boom

Landed at space port B and walked towards bar 9. On the way they passed the ‘Sprintway’ where citizens can run at top speed without risk. McFury couldn’t resist testing it out but quickly headed back to the others. On the way a couple of local thugs attempted to intimidate them for gear, but it didn’t go well for them.

Reaching bar 9, they went in but couldn’t find anything obvious except for 3 randomly placed spheres. They chose to accept the challenge and the challenge was “Destroy the bar”. Well, this challenge was for a Serf team that had chosen munitionist as their stage, but that didn’t stop them. They did it the hard way, fighting the bouncer, bar patrons, and the building support structures.

Once the bar was demolished, the bartender who had gotten out approached them. They were given a choice to get the clue about a base or get ‘mystery gear’. The gear was chosen and turned out to be a stack of large grenades.

Soon after, they were informed about the progress of all Serf teams on their game wiki.

September 18, 2026 - Progress Through Bars

The team set about healing their wounds with their med kits. During that time, their game wiki warned that another Serf team has “Passed within 1 km of your present location”. They hid and continued to heal. Eventually, they spotted and were spotted by the Serf5 team. It was a very similar group including a four armed beast and one who could fly. They also recognized mannerisms that indicated another group of Aggressors.

They negotiated a trade of information - the reward for bar 10 was revealed to be stim patches. It was also noted that Serf5 all had med packs instead of kits, but wouldn’t reveal where they got them from. Serf5 indicated that they were not going to hunt any other teams and went on their way to bar 9 (which was rapidly being rebuilt).

Guessing that bar 10 might be medic related, they skipped additional healing and went straight there. No challenge was apparent and the group was tempted to use one of their five ‘freebies’. It was noticed however that the bartender was having trouble keeping up with serving a very unruly crowd. Jayani offered to help and her beermaking knowledge was put to good use to serve appropriate drinks. Jayani convinced the bartender to let them borrow med packs to do some better healing.

Eventually the group decided to accept the challenge, which turned out to be helping the bartender which had already been accomplished. They didn’t want the stims, so chose to learn about base 10 which turned out to require sharp shooter skills to get to the shortcut. They used the borrowed med packs to heal up and then went to bar 1.

Bar 1 didn’t have an obvious challenge. The only possible hint they had was that the patrons of the bar seemed to be either current or former prisoners awaiting transport. Though why the prisoners were still lightly armed was anyone’s guess. Serf3 chose to use a freebie and were awarded with high-end medical packs. They continued on to bar 2.

Bar 2 seemed to have a scuzzy feel, with a lot of lowlife individuals. They also noticed a stealthy reptiloid briefly who winked at them. They guessed that this bar required stealth which is not one of their strengths, so they chose to use a freebie. The bartender took them into a back room and offered them either information about a base, or a large sum of money that would be transferred to them secretly once the contest was over. They chose info on base 2, which turned out to be useless as it didn’t have a shortcut.

On the way to bar 3, they got another warning of a nearby Serf team. Based on starting locations, it was likely Serf1. They hid and waited and eventually were attacked. The attackers used stealth against them, but didn’t account for Serf3 having grenades. Eventually they decided the fight wasn’t worth it and withdrew and it was apparent they were awarded move boots at some point. Based on their ducking and stealth abilities, they were almost certainly defenders.

Of the hundred hours allocated to phase 1, 9 hours have passed.

The group did some healing and then headed to bar 3. They found a shooting contest going on, so surmised correctly that it was the challenge. They joined a pistol shooting challenge, which Jayani won. They received long range laser rifles as the ‘mystery gear’.

On the way to bar 4, a sudden alert was put out on local communication channels that gravity was going to be adjusted. After a ten second countdown the huge planet's gravity was no longer being compensated for and everyone was pressed to the ground. Out of the central structure of the city, a native Gigasian emerged and casually walked to the spaceport. He was human-like except massed about ten tonnes. He seemed comfortable in the high gravity.

Eventually the gravity returned to normal and the team continued to bar 4. In it, there were no obvious contests or challenges. They did encounter the Serf 2 team and were able to trade some information - Serf 2 got armoured helmets in bar 6, bar 6 had a couple large robots, and bar 5 had a Batori. They chose base info at bar 5 and learned about the sharp shooter requirement at base 10. According to the scoreboard, they used freebies for both. They hadn’t decided what to do about bar 4 yet.

Serf 3 decided to use a freebie and received armour that will absorb 4 points of damage. They exchanged comms with Serf 2 and made their way to bar 5 - which apparently has a Batori.

Shortly after leaving bar 4, the scoreboard is updated. It appears Serf 3 is in the lead.

Entering bar 5 (named “IQ Test” for some reason), the team did indeed see a Batori, skulking atop a central structure within the building.

Serf 4, a trio of Felinids, was also in the bar, plagued with indecision as to if they could defeat the Batori. They were finishing some healing with their med kits and were equipped with armoured helmets, similar to the ones seen on Serf 2. Seeing Serf 3 come in, they figured that was an easier target, so attacked.

There was a lot of shooting by Serf 3 and stabbing by Serf 4, but in the end Serf 3 prevailed. A moment near the end of the fight saw Jayani suffer a devastating head wound, dropping her deep into negative stamina. McFury was able to fly over with patches before any permanent harm occurred.

Mystery gear could not be transferred between Serf teams, so the Felinid’s helmets could not be claimed. Serf 3 chose to use a freebie and received the coveted x3 move boots. They also achieved fourth stage.

October 11, 2026 - And Then There Were Two

Leaving the bar, Serf 3 hid nearby to heal. A few hours were wasted as the gravity field was turned off due to wandering Gigasians. Also during the healing, they received word that another Serf team was killed, leaving Serf 3 and two other teams in the game.

All healed up, they went to Bar 6. Serf 2 had indicated that armoured helmets could be acquired here. The bar didn’t reveal an obvious challenge, but a robotic foot was spotted poking out of a hidden holographic camouflage. A takolee made himself known, but while being part of the game, didn’t reveal what the challenge was. Jayani tried prescience from her newly acquired stage of mentalist, but only got the cryptic hint ‘deforestation’. Not wanting to risk not getting the helmets, the team used their last freebie to bypass the challenge. The takolee seemed disappointed, but arranged with the bartender to get them their helmets. The four armed battle droid, and the battle droid with the wood chipper in its chest were also disappointed.

On the way to Bar 7 they noticed a trolian following them, but chose to ignore him.

Approaching Bar 7, a member of Serf 5 spotted them and warned them away. The reason given was they didn’t want any other teams getting the gear they received there. They also revealed that it was they who killed another serf team. Jayani read his mind and found out they had the distasteful pain inducing disruptors and used them to incapacitate Serf 1 before killing them.

They headed to Bar 8, while also trying to enlist the aid of Serf 2 in dealing with Serf 5. Serf 2 wasn’t interested and Bar 8 turned out to have an obvious hand to hand challenge that the team wasn’t optimized for.

Hiding in a park nearby Bar 7, they waited for Serf 5 to leave. Eventually it became apparent they weren’t going to leave so patience was lost and Serf 3 attacked the next time one of them exited the base to check the surroundings. Aggressors do a lot of damage and don’t have much stamina, so being the victim of a surprise attack didn’t go too well - he was killed in one round. The second member of Serf 5 was killed moments later when he came out to help.

The last member stayed in the bar, not wanting to be shot at range. Serf 3 set up an ambush and McFury went inside to draw him out. Jaynai provided some magical ducking power beforehand to keep him somewhat safe. The less than intelligent final member of Serf 5 took the bait and followed McFury out and shot at him with his four disrupters. He missed on both attacks and was quickly brought down after that.

Finally getting into the bar, the team learned that the challenge was winning a karaoke contest, which was less than ideal. Despite trying to work around the challenge violently, they were not able to acquire the disruptors.
